St James has yet again partnered with Habitat for Humanity SA during the Desmond Tutu Building on Faith Blitz-Build Event which occurred 14 – 18 September in the township of Mfuleni. This event saw 15 homes being built by South African churches as well as 5 groups from the UK.  A total of ten homes were built by South African churches and a total of 5 homes were built by UK Christian groups.

We were very fortunate and blessed to have received support from the St James leadership and congregation members who have faithfully supported us year after year even in tough economic times.  So we put our faith into action and trusted God to provide R80 000, which is the cost to build one home. We were able to raise this full amount as well as additional funds which will go towards the cost of another home.

Our home owner, Abigail Ralo stayed in a small 2 roomed shack with her brother; wheelchair bound mom, 2 daughters and 2 grandchildren.  A total of 7 people were crammed into her humble shack.  On the 18th of September she and her family received a decent and simple 40m2, 2 bed roomed home, bathroom / toilet as well as an open plan lounge and kitchen.  For the first time in their lives they will have shelter protecting them from natural elements. Their new house includes indoor plumbing and electricity.  We built a ramp for Abigail’s wheelchair bound mom to make it easier for her to enter and leave the home.

Every morning faithful and committed volunteers met in the St James car park before 7am to leave at 7am to be seated at the Mfuleni high school hall at 8am. The day started with devotions and safety talks to prepare us for the day’s activities. During this week volunteers moved building blocks, built walls, mixed daggha, put up and tiled the roof and at the end of the 5 days we presented our home owner with her home as we handed the key and a bible in her language to her.

This has been a life changing event not only for the home owner to whom we demonstrated Christ’s love, but also for the volunteers who chose to be used by God as an answer to prayer for these home owners.

A big thank you to St James; leadership and congregation for their support, guidance, prayer and finances.  All glory to God and Jesus Christ our saviour for His provision and goodness.
