Senior Youth at St James (grade 10 – 12) went away on our annual Summer Camp at the Legendary Wortelgat on 25 – 27 September. It is always a special camp because of the great camp site and awesome camp food lovingly made for us by our camp Mum and Dad Uncle Brian and Aunty Beryl, but mostly because it is always the last camp of our St James Youth calendar that our Matrics would attend.

Our Camp Speaker was Sean Savides. He challenged us from what Paul writes to the Philippians in chapter 2 on changing our attitudes and making sure we are living like Jesus in this world. He also gave us practical ways of what that would look like for us in our daily lives. It was great having his family on camp with us too.

We had lots of electives to choose from which the leaders ran. We had one on Feminism run by Michelle and I – on what it means to be a true women in this world; Hard Questions were answered by Corne and Byron; Eco / Green was lead by Kenny – exploring our duties as Christians in looking after the world God has given us; The Alpha Male was lead by Kim – on what it looks like to be a godly man and lastly Praise and Worship and how we should go about it was lead by Jess and Darren. We enjoyed great individual Quiet Times and also Discussion Times in our different groups.

On Saturday night we had our Camp Fire where we were able to say good bye to our Matrics and they to us, and were able to share about camp highlights and what we have learnt and then we enjoyed spending time in prayer together to our Heavenly Father.

Although it rained on Saturday and Sunday – it kept us together and we all played soccer and our new Senior Youth game called ‘Ninja’ and of course ‘Killer Uno’.

Even though we were stuck in a bit of Hermanus Whale Festival traffic on the bus drive coming home, we used the time by singing as many songs as we could think of at the top of our lungs, playing ‘the wolf vs. the innocent girl’, and ‘Concentration’ (some classic camp games!). All in all it was a great time of fellowship and getting to know each other better around God’s Word.
