In Christ Alone
The Relevance of the Reformation truths for Today
Speaker: Melvin Tinker
Join us for three evenings in April
10th - By Faith alone
11th - By Christ alone
12th - By Grace alone
This year marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The Gospel which was rediscovered then is as powerful to change now. The three great ‘solas’ – the ‘alones’ -which mark the key elements of the Good News, Faith, Christ and Grace will be explored from the Bible to show how essential they are to genuine Christianity, vibrant spiritual life and church growth. The series should enrich our vision of Christ and invigorate us in our discipleship.
About the Speaker – Melvin Tinker
A popular speaker and author, Melvin Tinker earned an undergraduate degree in Botany and Geography from Hull University and a graduate degree from Oxford in theology. Also reading theology (post-graduate) with distinction at Oxford, Melvin has authored over sixty articles and numerous books on a range of subjects related to ethics and theology.
Melvin’s writings display a concern for faith interacting with culture. Article titles/topics from his writings reflect this emphasis on faith and culture, for example such books as: “Why do bad things happen to good people?”; “Intended for Good: The Providence of God” “Reclaiming Genesis”; “Ecclesiastes for Today,”; “ A Lost God in a Lost World: From Deception to Deliverance; A Plea for Authentic Christianity” and most recently, “Touchy Topics” (Evangelical Press Books).
Since Melvin’s ministry has generally occurred in local church settings (since 1994 as Vicar at the Anglican St John’s Newland, Hull, England) which has seen considerable growth in that time, he also expresses a passion for expository preaching and a desire that God raise up preachers for today. This passion for preaching corresponds with a sincere belief in the relevance of the gospel for a secular world.
Of his desire to speak to contemporary culture he writes: “Evangelism and engaging with the modern world for the sake of the kingdom is . . . dear to me. My writings seek to bridge the gap between the purely academic and the more popular levels of theology. The aim, whether writing at the academic or popular level, is the same, namely to enable God’s people to serve him in his world.”
Melvin is married to Heather. They have three grown sons and seven grand-children.
