Home Groups

What is a home group?

A home group is a gathering of about 10 people who meet weekly in a home to explore the Bible under a trained leader.  The group members help each other to think through what God is saying.  As friendships grow, encouragement to live in the light of the Word becomes more of a feature.

What do I have to do in the group?

Simply enjoy getting to know others around a discussion about the Bible.  A typical meeting will have time for coffee, time for chatting about life, a hearty discussion around the Bible and Christian living, and time for prayer.  You simply act as you would in any discussion – listening and contributing where you feel you can.  You don’t have to do anything you are not comfortable with.

What is each group member’s responsibility?

Be at all meetings – an erratic attendance will not foster a group dynamic.  Of course, there may be times when missing a meeting will be unavoidable – that’s life – just let the leader know so that everyone isn’t kept waiting because they are expecting you.

How long do they run for?

As a rule, there will always be a starting and ending date to each group.  In the future, we will be moving to a six-month commitment.  When groups re-form, it is quite likely that many will be made up of original members.

What day and time do the groups meet?

Groups meet on Wednesdays, starting around 7pm - 7:30pm, and running for one-and-a-half hours. Exact times will be discussed and finalised by groups themselves.  There are no meetings during school holidays.

We have a few home groups that will continue to run with their existing members.  More home groups will be developed in the future.

What are we going to be doing this semester?

Wisdom for Life

There is no doubt that the process of decision making is a difficult one for all of us. Some decisions are of course trivial and we make them without thinking twice. Others are far more significant and we agonize over what we should do, and sometimes feel paralyzed and unable to decide. We value the freedom and responsibility that goes with decision making, but at times we wish that someone would simply tell us what to do.

Being a Christian does not remove the responsibility for decision making nor does it make the process any easier. In fact at times it makes it harder because we find ourselves asking what the Lord would have us do. We wish that the Lord would simply reveal His will directly, but the Lord expects us to use our God-given minds. It is at this point that the Wisdom Literature of the Bible – books like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes – have an important part to play in our daily life. They are designed to teach us how to think correctly about our world and how to live in a way that is 'in-step’ with God’s design. In short, they are designed to give us wisdom for life!
