U-Turn is a Christian non-profit organisation that has been working with the homeless for a number of years, addressing their spiritual, physical and emotional needs. As a local church, we are in partnership with U-Turn. Meal/clothing vouchers are available from the St James Church office and book shop. These can be given to the homeless people in the Southern Suburbs, rather than a small cash donation.

Building on Faith - Habitat for Humanity
St James Church has been partnering with Habitat for Humanity for the last nine years in striving towards building homes for those who have been living in shacks for most of their lives. This is one of the practical ways in which we are putting our faith into action. Some of the townships we have built in so far are Khayelitsha, Masiphumele, Nyanga KTC, Greenfields, Wallacedene and Mfuleni. For the past three years, we have been building homes for families in Mfuleni, a township that is close to Khayelitsha. The areas in which we build are characterised by poverty and unemployment, and for the people who live there, survival is a daily battle.
Each year during September, St James participates in the church build, Building on Faith. Volunteers from our congregation join other churches to erect a house for a family during a 5-day blitz build. This is a time of tremendous blessing and fellowship as we work together to show Christ's love to those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
Months before the build, the St James Habitat for Humanity committee kicks off the fundraising drive, trusting God to bless us with the money we need to build a house. Each year, God has faithfully provided for our needs. There are many opportunities for congregation members to become involved; some give of their finances, others help with the fundraising events and others join us during the Building on Faith, helping to build the home.
During the week of the build, there are opportunities to interact with the children and to share the gospel with individuals in the townships. Whatever your age or ability, there are many opportunities to become involved with Habitat for Humanity.
Habitat for Humanity is an International Christian Organization and this is an opportune vehicle for Christians and churches to reach out and touch lives.
